Tale of three boys

In 2011, we wrote to our supporters to tell them  about the three Oosthuizen boys, who were all born with cataracts. The boys received lens implants when they were 10 months old, but because their eyes are still growing, they have to wear tinted multi-focal glasses to assist their vision.

The cost of buying all three boys specialised glasses every year is beyond the family’s reach. Mrs Oosthuizen knew she couldn’t put a price on her sons’ vision, so she asked for our help – and after reading their story; generous donors stepped forward to assist the family.

A kind donor paid for the new glasses while other donations were utilised to pay for the specialised testing and other expenses. Mrs Oosthuizen wrote this lovely letter after her boys received their shiny new glasses:

Dear Donor,
You do not even know us, yet you did a wonderful thing for us. My three boys, who are partially sighted, needed new glasses. As it turned out, the oldest did not need glasses, because his eyes are stable for the moment.

The boys received their new glasses and they are so happy. They have been walking around and telling me how much better they can see … telling me that they do not have to sit as close to the television as before … and cleaning their glasses with the little cloths that were in the new cases they received.
I wish you could see them, you would have realised that you have done a great thing. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. You are a great person and you can feel good, for what you have done.

Best wishes and God bless,
Gerda Oosthuizen
