Positions available at Council
The following four positions are available at the South African National Council for the Blind (Council), a leading Non-Governmental Organisation and an equal opportunity employer.
National Exective Director (NED)
Council seeks to appoint a dynamic and articulate individual to assume responsibilities as soon as possible. Reporting to the National Executive Committee, the NED will lead the organisation’s activities. A working knowledge of disability in general and blindness in particular, will be an added advantage. Visually impaired South African citizens are encouraged to apply.
Qualifications, experience and skills
- The ideal candidate for this position will:
- be a team player with excellent communication and negotiation skills;
- have the ability to communicate at the highest possible level with relevant stakeholders in government and the public and private sectors;
- have appropriate qualifications and/or, at least five years experience in senior management; and
- have exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing Council, inclusive of community development, training, and blindness prevention;
- Resource mobilisation to support the work of Council;
- Advocacy with government and the media;
- Networking and marketing the organisation;
- Providing a strategic direction to the organisation; and
- Leading and motivating the management team.

Administration Officer: Access Division
The purpose of this position is to provide and ensure adequate support to the Access Programme Manager as well as the Access Division as a whole.
Qualifications, experience and skills:
- Three year tertiary qualification in Secretarial or Office Administration.
- Preferably five years, relevant working experience;
- Computer literate in MS Office software;
- Experience in setting up and updating large data files;
- Experience in Event Management (workshops, meetings, conferences);
- Exceptional organisational and record keeping skills;
- Excellent business communication (verbal and written);
- Ability to work independently and within a team;
- Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills;
- Ability to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines; and
- Ability to liaise with government departments and other organisations.

Driver: Mobile Eye Care Unit
This position is available at the Bureau for the Prevention of Blindness, a division of Council.
Qualifications, experience and skills
The ideal candidate for this position will:
- be in possession of a Grade 12 qualification or equivalent;
- have a Code 10 valid drivers licence and a PDP;
- be prepared to travel extensively throughout the country;
- be prepared to work long hours;
- be able to start ASAP;
- have good interpersonal skills and courtesy with patients; and
- have the ability to work under pressure and interact with multidisciplinary team members.
Responsibilities include:
- Driving a vehicle to transport staff and equipment;
- Registering clients attending the eye clinic;
- Dispensing spectacles;
- Handling finance matters;
- Keeping records and reporting on duties carried out;
- Assisting the team in transporting patients to and from theatre; and
- Performing general tour duties as determined by the Tour leader.

Secretary: Skills Development Division
Qualifications, experience and skills:
- Degree or National Diploma plus appropriate experience;
- Excellent track record, knowledge and experience in relation to working with blind and partially sighted people;
- Understanding and knowledge of disability in general and blindness in particular;
- Appropriate experience in secretarial work and extensive knowledge in document management and preparation;
- Extensive experience in the use of Microsoft packages: Word, Excel, Power Point, Internet and Outlook/GroupWise;
- Proactive, innovative and outgoing person who can develop and manage relationships and service delivery operations and projects;
- A keen interest in the life long learning and development of all people;
- An ability to work under pressure; and
- Self motivated and extremely disciplined.
Responsibilities include:
- Manage and organise the office of the Skills development Manager;
- Coordinate the receipt of inputs/ reports from sub-units and provinces on behalf of the Manager;
- Provide well supported internal management processes;
- Ensure/coordinate fast and efficient handling of all correspondence and meeting of deadlines for documents;
- Professional formatting and finalisation of a range of documentation; and
- Manage travel arrangements, manage filling systems for the unit, do typing, faxing and photocopying.
