The overriding aim of entrepreneurial training at Council is to identify blind people in rural and township areas, so that they can be provided with essential independence skills and capacity building to enable them to set up informal income-generating projects.

Blind people are trained on how to start and improve their own businesses through the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Start and Improve Your Own Business (SIYB) training course.

Council offers technical training in the following areas:

  1. Detergent making;
  2. Leather work;
  3. Beading;
  4. Candle-making;
  5. Bee keeping;
  6. Gardening;
  7. Baking;
  8. Cane weaving; and,
  9. Wood work.

The training in these skills offers visually impaired persons the opportunity to become entrepreneurs and to earn a living. They can join self-help groups in their area which are also supported by Council and enjoy the company and support of other visually impaired people.
