Take the Amsler Grid Eye Test

Directions:

  1. Sit at a comfortable reading distance from the screen and cover left eye.
  2. Focus right eye on the centre dot. All four corners of the square should be visible without removing gaze from the centre dot. All the lines should appear straight and continuous and the squares should be uniform in size.
  3. Repeat the test with the other eye.

If the lines appear wavy, interrupted or missing; if colours other than black and white appear; if the squares appear unequal in size or if there are holes or spaces in the grid, contact your optometrist immediately.

(Intermittent white dots appearing at the line intersections are a normal optical illusion.)

If your eyesight is normal, please spare a thought for those who cannot even see the computer screen ... who cannot access the Internet, books, television, or even walk about unaided ... because they are blind.

You can't give them back their sight, but you CAN help them live useful, independent and fulfilling lives. If you can spare R75 or R100 now, you'll make a difference to a blind South African's life.
